About Me

Amy A. Smith, LMFT - child therapist in Claremont, California

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor specializing in child, adolescent, individual and family therapy, and I maintain a private practice in Claremont, CA.

With 10 years experience working with children and teens in the mental health field, and as a graduate of California State University, Fullerton, I am currently serving as a private practitioner working with a broad spectrum of clients.  I use a wide range of techniques including an interactive, solution-focused approach, Gestalt therapy, cognitive behavioral, and strength based approaches. My therapeutic approach is to provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges.  With compassion and understanding, I work with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.

Among my areas of expertise are using both directive and non-directive play therapy with children and adolescents, substance abuse with adolescents, depression, anxiety and grief/loss  I also enjoy working with children who may be experiencing academic difficulties, are diagnosed with ADHD or a learning disorder. Additionally, I enjoy working with college athletes; as a former college athlete and collegiate coach, I believe I understand the specific issues many athletes deal with (stress managment, time managment, performance anxiety,  injuries, identity issues, etc) very well.

As a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, I especially enjoy working with young children and adolescents, and use both directive and non-directive play therapy techniques.
